What to Wear for Soulful Indoor Portraits (Kids, Seniors, Families)

Wondering what to wear for your studio session? Here are easy, flattering outfit tips for kids, seniors, families, and pets.

One of the biggest questions I get is: “What should we wear?”

Good news: you don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe. You just need a few smart choices that photograph beautifully, especially for the classic, soulful style I love creating at Studio Q.

The #1 rule: wear something that feels like you

If you hate it in real life, you’ll hate it in photos. Comfort matters, especially for kids and seniors.

Go for simple + timeless

Yes to:

  • Solid colors

  • Soft textures (knits, denim, linen)

  • Layers (jackets, sweaters, scarves)

  • Dresses with movement

  • Well-fitted basics

Avoid if possible:

  • Tiny busy patterns

  • Big logos/graphics

  • Neon colors (they reflect and can overpower skin tones)

Best colors for Studio Q’s “soulful” vibe

These photograph beautifully in classic lighting:

  • Cream, camel, chocolate

  • Soft blues, navy

  • Olive, rust, mustard

  • Burgundy

  • Black + white (always a win)

For families: coordinate, don’t match

Pick 2-3 main colors and mix them through outfits. Think “together” not “identical.”

For seniors: bring variety

A great senior session wardrobe formula:

  1. One classic outfit (timeless)

  2. One outfit that feels like their personality

  3. One “wow” piece (jacket, dress, boots, etc.)

For pets: keep it clean and simple

Brush them out, wipe noses and eyes, and bring treats. If your pet has a collar, choose one that looks nice (or go without for a cleaner look).

If you want, I can help you plan outfits before your session, just send me a few photos of options and I’ll give you a simple yes/no and why.
